In Johannesburg’s charming Westcliff neighbourhood, history and modernity blend seamlessly, creating a fascinating balance between past and present. Nestled atop a steep cliff, Westcliff offers breathtaking panoramic views of the surrounding landscape and fascinates with its rich architectural heritage.

Built before Johannesburg was granted city status in 1928, Westcliff is filled with homes designed by renowned architects such as Herbert Baker and FLH Fleming. These homes, which are testament to age-old craftsmanship, feature lush gardens and charming façades that evoke a bygone era.

Adding an extra dimension to the beauty of Westcliff is the commendable initiative of the Johannesburg Heritage Foundation to affix blue historical information plaques to the area’s iconic homes. These elegant plaques offer a captivating glimpse into the past by revealing the names of the architects and original owners, as well as the geographical significance of the locations. Each heritage plaque transforms a simple stroll through the neighbourhood into an enchanting journey through time.

The magical atmosphere that reigns over Westcliff takes on a special dimension during the jacaranda season, when the flowering trees tint the neighbourhood a vibrant purple. These delicate petunias create a veritable floral sky above the streets, infusing the area with a poetic atmosphere.

At the heart of this neighbourhood steeped in history is South Africa’s only Four Seasons hotel, the Four Seasons Hotel, The Westcliff. Nestled on a site with a controversial past, this property embodies both old-world charm and contemporary luxury. Once occupied by a luxury residential building, the site has undergone several transformations before becoming the sophisticated setting it is today.
