Agricultural feeder roads in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) are at the heart of an innovative initiative that aims to stimulate rural development and improve the living conditions of smallholder farmers. The National Agricultural Development Program (PNDA), supported by the World Bank, has launched an ambitious project to build 3,049 kilometers of roads in twelve territories in four provinces of the country.
This project, worth $300 million, represents a real lever for Congolese agriculture. Indeed, these agricultural feeder roads will not only facilitate access to markets for smallholders, but also increase their productivity. In addition, this initiative will contribute to strengthening food security and reducing rural poverty in the targeted regions.
The identification of the axes to be built was carried out in close collaboration with the Agricultural Feeder Road Office (OVDA) and based on available cartographic data. The provinces of Kasai, Kasaï-Central, Kongo-Central and Kwilu will benefit from this program, which aims to support 300,000 smallholder farmers.
This project is not limited to road construction; it is part of a holistic approach to promote sustainable agricultural development in the DRC. By promoting the connectivity of rural areas, it will improve access to basic services, agricultural inputs and technologies. It will also help reduce the isolation of rural communities and strengthen their resilience to climate and economic shocks.
The vision of the PNDA and the World Bank goes beyond simple road infrastructure: it is about building a better future for Congolese farmers and promoting a dynamic and prosperous agricultural sector. By investing in agricultural feeder roads, these actors contribute to the economic transformation of the country and job creation in rural areas.
In conclusion, the project to build agricultural access roads in the DRC represents a real development opportunity for the agricultural sector and for the entire population. It embodies the commitment of the Congolese authorities and their partners to promote modern, competitive and sustainable agriculture.
