The province of Kwilu in the Democratic Republic of Congo is facing a measles epidemic which has already led to the death of at least 103 people, the majority of whom are children under the age of 5. Since last January, more than 5,700 cases of measles have been reported in the region, which is alarming.
Dr. Aimerance Nioka, acting head of the Provincial Health Division, said in an interview with Radio Okapi that out of the 24 health zones in the province, 16 are affected by measles. Among the most affected areas are Bandundu, Bagata, Bulungu, Lusanga, Kikwit-Nord, Kikwit-Sud, Masimanimba, Mwanza, Mungindu, Kingandu, Gungu, Koshibanda, Pay Kongila and Yasa Bonga.
It is essential that parents respect the vaccination schedule of their children to prevent the spread of the disease. Treatment for measles in Kwilu province is free, so it is crucial to bring children to treatment facilities as soon as symptoms appear.
Unfortunately, the response to measles is not yet organized due to a lack of resources. However, Dr. Aimerance Nioka assured that a response will be put in place soon throughout the province of Kwilu to fight against this epidemic.
It is important to emphasize that routine vaccination of children is an effective way to break the measles contamination chain. The Kwilu Provincial Health Division therefore strongly encourages regular vaccination of children to prevent the spread of this disease.
It is essential to sensitize the population on the importance of vaccination and to provide the necessary means for an effective response against measles in the province of Kwilu. The health and well-being of children are at stake, and it is our responsibility to take measures to protect them and prevent future epidemics
