Rwanda, Favourite to Co-Organize CHAN 2024

Rwanda is positioning itself as a credible alternative to co-host the 2024 African Nations Championship (CHAN), in response to delays encountered by Kenya in preparations. With its past experience and quality sports infrastructure, Rwanda could be asked to host the event alongside Tanzania and Uganda. CAF thus recognizes Rwanda’s professionalism and commitment to the development of sport on the continent. This potentiality underlines Rwanda’s ability to overcome logistical challenges and provide a memorable experience for teams and spectators, becoming a success story for African countries aspiring to host major sporting events.
Rwanda is positioning itself as a serious option to host the 8th edition of the African Nations Championship (CHAN) in 2024. While Kenya faces significant logistical challenges regarding the construction works of the International Sports Centre, Kasarani, Rwanda offers a credible alternative thanks to its past experience in hosting sporting competitions of this caliber.

CAF’s recent inspection visit to Kenya highlighted the backlog in the progress of the works required to host CHAN 2024. With a deadline of 31 December 2024 to finalize the required sports infrastructure, Kenya is under pressure to meet the deadlines. Failure to meet these requirements could result in Rwanda being asked to co-host the event with CECAFA members Tanzania and Uganda.

Rwanda, which has already successfully hosted CHAN in 2016, has solid expertise in staging international competitions. The Amahoro National Stadium, in the heart of the capital Kigali, has proven its ability to host high-level sporting events. The 2016 edition of CHAN, won by the Democratic Republic of Congo, was hailed for its exemplary organization and success on all fronts.

By selecting Rwanda as a potential co-host of CHAN 2024, CAF recognizes the country’s professionalism and commitment to the development of sport on the continent. This decision highlights Rwanda’s ability to meet logistical and organizational challenges, while providing a memorable experience for participating teams and spectators.

Ultimately, Rwanda represents not only a viable alternative in times of need, but also a success story for African countries aspiring to host major sporting events. Its potential nomination as co-host of CHAN 2024 would be a testament to the confidence placed in its capabilities and its willingness to contribute significantly to the development of football in Africa.
