**Constitutional revision and social inclusion of people living with disabilities: a necessary step forward**
People living with disabilities are an essential component of our society, representing approximately 13% of the population of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Their voice and needs must be taken into account in the political and constitutional decisions that concern them. It is with this in mind that a major event recently took place, highlighting the importance of constitutional revision to ensure true social inclusion of these citizens.
Organized by the Ministry responsible for people living with disabilities and other vulnerable people, this workshop allowed these individuals to reflect on the issues related to the revision of the Constitution in the DRC. Under the leadership of the Minister Delegate, Me Irène Esambo Diata, the participants expressed their support for a radical change to the Constitution in order to better meet their specific needs and comply with international standards on the rights of people with disabilities.
The recommendations made during this meeting highlight the need for a thorough revision of the Constitution to ensure real social inclusion of people living with disabilities. Indeed, the current legislation would not be in line with the International Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities, not taking sufficient account of crucial issues such as sign language and other aspects essential to the full participation of these individuals in society.
The event also highlighted the importance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, celebrated on December 3, 2024 in Kinshasa. This year’s theme, “Constitutional revision and other institutional reforms: impact and perspectives on the social inclusion of people living with disabilities”, highlights the need to rethink our political and social structures to ensure real equality of opportunity for all citizens, regardless of their abilities.
In conclusion, the constitutional revision appears to be an essential lever to promote the social inclusion of people living with disabilities in the Democratic Republic of Congo. By rethinking our fundamental texts and adopting a more inclusive approach, we will be able to build a more just and equitable society for all its members, without distinction.
