Heavy rains, mudslides carrying away a large part of the villages of Bushushu and Nyamukubi, more than 400 dead and thousands of victims… the damage caused by the bad weather in the territory of Kalehe, in South Kivu, was immense. Faced with this dramatic situation, the government of the Republic of Korea has decided to support the affected communities by granting an amount of US$250,000 to UNICEF. This sum will enable the United Nations agency to meet the most urgent needs of the populations affected by the floods, in particular access to drinking water, in an area endemic to cholera.
UNICEF Representative in the DRC, Grant Leaity, welcomed this financial support, stressing the importance of these funds for the provision of water, sanitation and hygiene kits, life-saving medicines and necessary equipment. to help the communities of Kalehe. Humanitarian coordinator Bruno Lemarquis had already allocated $3 million for the immediate response after the disaster.
In this context, Bintou Keita, the special representative of the UN Secretary General in the DRC, had called on all goodwill to mobilize the necessary funds to help the affected communities. The support of the Republic of Korea therefore comes as a very important support for UNICEF and the affected populations, who will thus be able to benefit from the necessary aid.
