“The Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship: 10 years after their tragic disappearance, RFI supports young talents in African journalism”

Ten years after the tragic assassination of RFI reporters Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon in Kidal, in northern Mali, the emotion is still strong. To commemorate their memory and perpetuate their passion for journalism, RFI is launching the tenth edition of the Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship. This scholarship, open to young journalists and technicians under the age of 35 residing in one of the 25 French-speaking African countries, offers training in Abidjan, followed by an opportunity to work on a report for journalists and on a sound element for the technicians.

This initiative is a way to pay tribute to Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon, while encouraging and supporting young talents from the African continent. The choice of the date for awarding the scholarship, November 2, corresponds to the International Day to end impunity for crimes committed against journalists, in memory of the two assassinated reporters. The winners will also have the opportunity to benefit from a one-month training in Paris.

Applications for the tenth edition of the Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship are open until Friday August 25 at midnight, Paris time. Candidates must complete an entry form, provide their curriculum vitae, a cover letter and a report or sound item corresponding to their field. A selection will then be made to choose the ten best journalist candidates and the ten best technician candidates, who will participate in the training in Abidjan.

This grant demonstrates RFI’s commitment to promoting press freedom and supporting young journalistic talent in Africa. By offering this opportunity for training and professional development, RFI hopes to create a new generation of talented journalists and technicians, who will continue the work of Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon in covering topical issues and giving a voice to the people of Africa.

By commemorating the tenth anniversary of their tragic disappearance, the Ghislaine Dupont and Claude Verlon Scholarship is more determined than ever to perpetuate the legacy of these two passionate reporters and to encourage journalistic excellence on the African continent
