First Forum on Gender Statistics in the DRC: Promoting Gender Equality through Statistical Data

This morning, Fatshimetrie published a captivating article on an event of crucial importance for gender equality in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The National Institute of Statistics (INS), in partnership with UN Women, is organizing the first ever forum for dialogue between producers and users of gender-sensitive statistics, taking place from 20 to 21 November in Kinshasa.

This two-day event brings together a diverse panel of actors working in the gender sector, civil society as well as technical and financial partners. The main objective is to discuss the current state and the challenges that persist in the integration of gender statistics in Congolese public policies.

It is telling that the DRC has made significant progress in implementing international commitments on gender equality and women’s empowerment. However, obstacles remain in assessing disparities between men and women in various aspects of development.

Élysée Chovu, Director General of the INS, underlines the importance of gender statistics in measuring the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in developing policies aimed at gender equality. He emphasizes the need for reliable statistical data for informed decision-making, stressing the importance of sustaining this type of activity.

Adama Moussa, representative of UN Women in the DRC, highlights his organization’s commitment to promoting the empowerment of Congolese women. He emphasizes the importance of improving the culture of gender-sensitive statistics to strengthen the capacities of the national statistical system and involve all stakeholders in this process.

The announcement of the development of a first statistical law in the DRC by the INS marks a major turning point in the management of the national statistical system. This forum is part of UN Women’s global “Women Count” program, aimed at improving the production, availability and use of quality statistics for gender equality and women’s empowerment.

In summary, this event heralds a significant step forward in the promotion of gender equality in the DRC and demonstrates the commitment of national and international actors in this area. Establishing an inclusive and reliable statistical culture is a crucial step towards a more equitable future for all.
