Congolese journalists face danger: threats and violence in the media sphere

The shockwave that is shaking the Congolese media sphere resonates like a sinister echo of doom, as four talented journalists have tragically died in the space of just one week. These successive disappearances have plunged the country into deep mourning and raised crucial questions about the safety of press professionals.

At the heart of this dark picture, the death of Jemimah Diane Mogwo, a distinguished journalist with Radiotélévision nationale congolaise (RTNC), has caused a particularly devastating shockwave. Victim of an attack of unprecedented violence as she was returning home after hosting the 11:00 p.m. news, Jemimah Mogwo was attacked by armed individuals, thus signaling the existence of real dangers for people carrying out their profession with courage and determination.

The sad fate of Jemimah Mogwo is unfortunately part of a broader context of threats and violence against journalists in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The stories of other disappearances, such as that of Eugène Ngimbi Mabedo, publisher of the newspaper L’Intermédiaire, or Claude-Constant Nyembwe Mutoka, a key figure in the Congolese written press, paint a dark and worrying picture regarding the safety of media actors in the country.

Beyond these individual tragedies, each death is an immense loss for freedom of the press and the democratic vitality of the Congolese nation. Journalists play an essential role in society by informing the public, shedding light on sometimes disturbing truths, and giving a voice to those who are not heard. Their safety and freedom are fundamental pillars of any democratic and enlightened society.

It is imperative that the Congolese authorities take urgent measures to guarantee the safety of journalists and fight against impunity for attackers. The media must not become battlefields where lives are sacrificed in the name of information. The memory of Jemimah Mogwo, and her fallen colleagues, deserves that their legacy be honoured with a firm and determined commitment to protect press freedom and the safety of media professionals.
