**Thousands displaced as violence escalates in Sudan’s Al-Jazeera State**
The harrowing story of Hadeel Abdelnasir, a 30-year-old mother of three, reflects the current plight in eastern Al-Jazeera. Forced to flee her home two weeks ago due to violence in her community, she is now in Port Sudan, sharing her harrowing tale of survival.
“The Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are killing everyone – women, children, men and the elderly. They have invaded our peaceful villages to seek revenge for no reason. People are paying huge ransoms to escape this nightmare,” she says.
The violence in Al-Jazeera is the latest escalation in the civil war between the Sudanese Army and the RSF.
Rashida Yousif, another displaced mother now in Port Sudan, describes the horrors she and her group endured while fleeing.
“We are five families who fled together. One family was tortured, one woman was raped in front of her husband. One of the men was beaten by the RSF. Some of my relatives in Al-Hilaliya were poisoned. We have lost many loved ones,” she says.
A Region Under Siege
The escalation of violence follows the defection of an RSF commander to the Sudanese Army, leading to a surge in attacks. Al-Jazeera Conference Group reports that more than 500 villages have been evacuated, displacing tens of thousands of people.
“Since the commander’s defection, the RSF have killed hundreds of people and besieged many villages,” says independent analyst Abdulmoniem Abu-Idrees. “These crimes require urgent intervention.” Without justice for the victims, the situation could fuel ethnic divisions.”
Unanswered Calls for Action
Attempts to mediate peace have so far failed. This week, a UN Security Council resolution to protect civilians and end hostilities was blocked by Russia, leaving little hope for immediate international intervention.
The ongoing conflict exposes civilians to horrific violence, including killings, torture and sexual violence, while the lack of state protection worsens human rights violations.
“Recent attacks in Al-Jazeera have forced tens of thousands of people to flee,” said journalist Naba Mohideen, reporting from Port Sudan. “Families are desperate, with no end in sight to the violence.” »
