The Masisi region of the Democratic Republic of Congo has recently been the scene of violent clashes between the Armed Forces of the DRC (FARDC) and the M23 rebels. The town of Sake was the center of these fighting, which sowed terror among the civilian population.

The rebels launched a surprise attack in the early hours of the morning, targeting the positions of the Congolese armed forces in the surrounding hills. The localities of Vunano, Rutobogo, Kiuli and Kimoka were the scene of violent clashes, endangering the safety of the inhabitants of the region.

As they advanced, the M23 rebels fired several mortar shells on the town of Sake, causing material damage and injuring two civilians. Tensions were at their peak, and the inhabitants lived in constant fear of the fighting raging at the gates of their homes.

The DRC Armed Forces, for their part, had been on alert for several days, following the reinforcement of rebel positions in the Sake region. The Congolese troops had to face fierce resistance from the attackers, determined to fight.

This escalation of violence in the Masisi region highlights once again the fragility of the security situation in the DRC. Despite the efforts made by the government to restore peace and stability in the east of the country, armed groups continue to sow chaos and terror among the population.

It is crucial that concrete measures be taken to put an end to this spiral of violence and protect innocent civilians who are caught in the middle of this conflict. The international community must support the efforts of the Congolese government to guarantee security and stability in the region, and put a definitive end to the insecurity prevailing in the east of the DRC.
