Constitutional Reform in the DRC: Will a Vital Dialogue Between President Tshisekedi and Governors Lead to National Unity?

The meeting of provincial governors with President Félix Tshisekedi has generated great interest within the Congolese political community. During this crucial meeting in Kalemie, the Head of State responded to the concerns expressed by the collective of governors, particularly regarding the constitutional reform project currently under discussion.

In his opening speech at the 11th Conference of Governors, President Tshisekedi took into consideration the demands of the governors regarding the reform of the Constitution. He assured the governors that their requests would be carefully examined and that appropriate measures would be taken to meet their expectations. This responsiveness on the part of the Head of State demonstrates his willingness to listen to regional voices and to work closely with local leaders to meet the needs of the population.

The governors, for their part, stressed the crucial importance of constitutional reform for the future of the country. They unanimously expressed their support for this initiative, describing it as “legitimate and salutary” for the Congolese nation. Calling for unity and solidarity, they invited the entire population to mobilize in favor of this reform, seen as an essential lever for the development and consolidation of national cohesion.

At the same time, President Tshisekedi recently announced the establishment in 2025 of a national commission tasked with considering a new Constitution. This approach, which is part of a desire to modernize and renovate institutions, aims to guarantee a constitutional framework adapted to the current and future challenges of the country.

The political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo is marked by intense debates and tensions related to the issue of constitutional revision. Some fear attempts to extend the presidential mandate beyond two terms, which raises concerns and disputes within the political opposition and civil society.

In conclusion, the meeting between President Tshisekedi and the provincial governors laid the foundations for constructive dialogue and strengthened collaboration between central and regional authorities. This dynamic demonstrates a common desire to respond to the major challenges facing the DRC, by promoting national unity and working towards a better future for all Congolese.
