Kisangani, November 8, 2024 (Fatshimétrie) – A major conference-debate recently took place in Kisangani, in the northeast of the Democratic Republic of Congo, to celebrate the international ‘One Health’ day. This landmark event brought together experts from various fields, ranging from human health to animal health, including the environment.
One of the highlights of this conference was the promotion of biopesticides as an ecological alternative for crop protection. Professor Godefroid Monde of the Faculty Institute of Agronomic Sciences highlighted the importance of these products, highlighting their low toxicity and reduced environmental impact compared to chemical biopesticides. He also stressed that the sustainability of the protection offered by biopesticides depends on the method of application and the type of molecules used.
Another theme discussed during this conference was the role of biodiversity and unsanitary conditions in the transmission of diseases. Professor Nicaise Amundala of the University of Kisangani warned of the risks associated with Congolese biodiversity, which can be both a source of wealth and dangers, particularly due to the diversity of microorganisms that can cause diseases. He stressed the importance of preserving ecosystems to ensure harmonious cohabitation between man and nature.
The conference was also an opportunity for Doctor Génial Mputu, coordinator of the NGO ‘One health’/Tshopo, to congratulate himself on the success of the event, which brought together experts, local communities and young people, with a view to raising awareness and preparing the next generation.
The international ‘One health’ day celebrates the close links between animal health, human health and the environment, highlighting the importance of a global approach to addressing current health challenges. This conference-debate made it possible to highlight these crucial issues and mobilize the stakeholders concerned to work together towards a healthier and more sustainable future.
