Fatshimetrie, October 31, 2024 – The President of the Democratic Republic of Congo, Félix Tshisekedi, delivered a speech full of will and vision at the 23rd Summit of the Common Market for Eastern and Southern Africa (COMESA) held in Bujumbura, Burundi. During his speech, President Tshisekedi stressed his country’s willingness to work towards a partnership aimed at Africa’s prosperity through its natural resources.
In a context where the DRC is full of considerable agricultural and mining potential, President Tshisekedi called for close collaboration between Member States to transform these resources into levers of common prosperity. By integrating these resources into regional value chains, the objective is to guarantee solid food and energy security for the entire continent.
President Tshisekedi stressed the importance for African economies to break the cycle of dependence on the gross export of raw materials. He advocated for the construction of local value chains, thus promoting the transformation and enrichment of resources on African soil. This approach, according to him, is essential for job creation and the empowerment of African youth.
Over the past five years, the DRC has multiplied economic cooperation agreements with other African countries, particularly its neighbors. These agreements, based on a vision of win-win partnership, cover various sectors such as agriculture, mining, industry and digital technology. With Zambia, the DRC is working on the development of electric bacteria and cross-border trade. With Uganda, an agreement for the exploitation of fishery resources in Lakes Edward and Albert has been concluded.
In addition, the DRC has signed a trade and oil exploitation agreement with Angola, while a partnership focused on the exchange of experiences and logistical means has been established with South Africa. These collaborations demonstrate the DRC’s willingness to work for the economic development of Africa as a whole.
In conclusion, President Tshisekedi’s speech highlights the need for enhanced cooperation between African countries to fully exploit the continent’s potential. By focusing on the local transformation of natural resources and the development of strategic partnerships, Africa can aspire to shared and sustainable prosperity.
