The distribution of seats for the elections in the DRC responds to the concerns of senators

The distribution of seats by electoral district for legislative, provincial, municipal and local elections raises concerns among senators. During a plenary session last Wednesday, the Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Interior answered their questions relating to the distribution, in particular the procedures for distributing seats, the status of certain territorial entities as well as the question of security. .

The draft law on the distribution of seats was drawn up by the Independent National Electoral Commission (CENI), which distributed the seats according to the results of the revision of the electoral register. The identification and pre-registration of voters took place in three operational areas. The text must be promulgated no later than June 15 so that the CENI can convene the electorate for the national legislative elections from June 25.

Peter Kazadi reassured voters saying that the bill is the final step leading up to elections and that voter registration will take place according to the CENI timetable, in Kwamouth from June 26th to July 10th. For Rutshuru and Masisi, security conditions will have to be restored before enrollment can be organised.

In addition, the CENI kept the same number of seats obtained in 2018 for the three territories where voter registration was not organized due to insecurity. This decision should promote the participation of these territories in legislative and municipal elections.

In short, the distribution of seats by electoral district for the legislative, provincial, municipal and local elections is on the right track. The concerns of senators have been taken into account and the CENI timetable has been respected. Voters will thus be able to vote in the national legislative elections from 25 June.
