Title: Three days, three murders: insecurity in Butembo

The city of Butembo in the province of North Kivu is once again facing insecurity with three murders recorded in the space of three days.

The latest case is the murder of a relief teacher at Hanga Primary School. The school principal was the target of the assassins, but being in town to withdraw the teachers’ payroll money, they fell back on the teacher who was present at the scene. The bandits stabbed the teacher who unfortunately did not survive his injuries.

On the same day, a woman was beheaded in her home by armed men in the Malende district. Unofficial sources speculate that the victim was suspected of fetishism.

On May 27, an economic operator was assassinated with bladed weapons, after being lured outside his house by bandits who turned on the tap to lure him outside.

These cases of insecurity are recorded in a context where the city is under threat from militiamen who have taken up residence in peripheral localities and villages, all under siege.

These tragic events paralyzed activities in many schools in the region, which were in the middle of the end-of-year exam session.

Local authorities have launched an investigation to find the perpetrators of these terrorist acts. In the meantime, the local population remains in shock and worried for their safety.

Insecurity is a scourge that has dramatic consequences on the lives of citizens of North Kivu and on the socio-economic development of the region. It is urgent that the authorities take measures to put an end to this unacceptable situation
