In an era where leadership has become a scarce commodity, the quest for new models of values-based leadership is more relevant than ever. It was against this backdrop that the Values-Based Leadership in Africa Conference was held, an initiative that seeks to develop a new generation of transformational leaders on the African continent, particularly in Nigeria.
At the event titled “Values-Based Leadership: A Model for Africa,” political and influential figures spoke to underscore the critical importance of leadership anchored in strong values. Former President Obasanjo highlighted the dire lack of leadership in the world today, and called on leaders, African and Nigerian in particular, to govern with the fear of God to overcome current challenges.
The First Lady, Sen. Oluremi Tinubu, also stressed the need to promote justice at all levels to realize the dream of values-based leadership. According to her, justice is the cornerstone of godly leadership, ensuring fairness, equality and protection for all, especially the most vulnerable in society.
Prof. Jerry Gana, former Minister of Information, highlighted the critical importance of leadership for development in Africa and Nigeria in particular. He expressed the need to seek, uncover and inculcate new ideas to redefine the nature of leadership and governance, and thereby transform the African continent.
This conference on Values-Based Leadership in Africa offers a unique opportunity to rethink current leadership models and inspire a new vision for the future of the continent. In a world facing unprecedented challenges, it is critical that Africa equips itself with visionary, ethical and values-based leaders to address the complex challenges it faces.
Ultimately, this initiative seeks to promote leadership that combines justice, integrity, wisdom and social harmony, drawing on the teachings of Jesus Christ. By embracing such a leadership model, Africa can lead the way to a brighter future and help build a better world for future generations.
