The Urgency of Inclusive Governance: Young Nigerians at the Heart of Change

Amid deep frustration with Nigeria’s current governance, the recent waves of recurrent protests in the country highlight a deep malaise among the population. The leader of the Workers’ Party (LP) and former governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), Paul Orajiaka, sheds some essential light on these major issues and underlines the urgent need for reforms to foster youth engagement in governance.

The root of these protests can be traced to citizens’ frustration with the state of the country. The challenges they face are a direct result of poor governance, which fuels deep discontent with the ruling elites.

The high turnout of youth during these protests is indicative of the significant youthfulness of the Nigerian population. If the government were to perform its functions properly, these young people would not be on the streets but would be actively contributing to the growth and development of the country. It is crucial for the authorities to seize this opportunity and engage these youths who are peacefully demanding a better Nigeria, instead of repressing them with force.

It is undeniable that the dynamism observed during the protests does not always translate into meaningful voter turnout. This is largely due to the political and social environment in the country. Young people are often discouraged from participating in elections due to violence and intimidation during these crucial periods.

It is imperative that the youth realize that change and the future of the country will not be handed to them on a silver platter. They must actively engage in politics, especially at the local and state levels, to influence the selection of candidates and contribute to strengthening democracy in Nigeria.

As for the opposition parties, their ability to play a countervailing role depends on their internal cohesion. Persistent divisions affect their credibility and hamper their ability to act as a counterweight to the ruling party. It is essential that these parties resolve their internal disputes and focus their efforts on defending the interests of the people.

In short, the Nigerian youth represent immense potential for the country. It is time for this generation to take ownership of their voice and actively engage in politics to shape the future they deserve. Unity, responsibility and determination are essential keys to overcoming obstacles and building a more just, prosperous and inclusive nation for all Nigerians.
