The European Union (EU) Climate Month offers a unique opportunity to promote green growth and sustainable development, highlighting opportunities for collaboration between the EU, Nigeria and other key stakeholders. Under the theme “Opportunities to Grow Together Green”, a series of impactful events are being organised under the EU Global Strategy to highlight the importance of innovation, green growth and shared climate responsibility.
The EU Global Strategy aims to invest in sustainable infrastructure projects across the world, with a focus on key sectors in Nigeria such as energy, transport, digitalisation, climate-smart agriculture value chains, as well as health and education.
Highlights of the EU Climate Month include the Green Bond Stakeholder Dialogue, the EU-Nigeria Climate and Energy Dialogue, the training of Nigeria’s climate negotiators for COP29, the Nigeria Methane Emissions Reduction Programme, including a special workshop on emissions from the oil and gas sector, the launch of the Nigeria Energy Support Programme (NESP) III and the Get.Invest programmes in the renewable energy sector, as well as an event on sustainable aviation fuel.
On 10 October, leading representatives of European investors and Nigerian public and private entities involved in or ready to enter the green bond market gathered in Abuja to deepen their understanding of the opportunities in the Nigerian market, ahead of the imminent launch of the EU Global Green Bond Initiative, which could stimulate green investments of up to €15-20 billion.
Massimo De Luca, Head of Cooperation at the EU Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, highlighted that the EU Climate Month reflects the EU’s deep commitment to promoting sustainable solutions in partnership with Nigeria. Each event is an opportunity not only to share knowledge and good practices, but also to inspire innovation in tackling climate challenges. The aim is to foster lasting and impactful change through collaboration, enabling Nigeria and the EU to grow together in a green way.
This initiative is part of the EU Global Strategy, focusing on investing in sustainable infrastructure globally. Through these efforts, the EU aims to support green growth, particularly in key sectors such as energy, climate-smart agriculture and digitalisation, thereby contributing to Nigeria’s Sustainable Development Goals.
In conclusion, the EU Climate Month provides a unique platform for exchange to strengthen cooperation and innovation in the fight against climate change, while laying the foundations for green and sustainable growth for the future of Nigeria and the EU.
