Sensitization of journalists in Tanganyika on UN resolutions 1325 and 2250

Kalemie, October 17, 2024 – The Tanganyika Women in Media Network (REFEMET) recently organized a capacity-building workshop bringing together about thirty local journalists, with the aim of raising awareness among media professionals on United Nations resolutions 1325 and 2250. This event, which was held in Kalemie, Tanganyika province in the Democratic Republic of Congo, was an opportunity to highlight the importance of these resolutions for the consolidation of peace and security in the region.

Théophile Bulembe, head of office at the provincial division of Gender, Family and Children of Tanganyika, stressed the importance of raising awareness among journalists on these resolutions. He highlighted the provincial plan for the implementation of resolution 1325, already in place in some territories but still little known in others. According to him, the media can play a crucial role in disseminating this information to the local population.

The workshop also highlighted the essential role of journalists as information relays for the popularization of resolutions 1325 and 2250. Théophile Bulembe stressed the importance of media involvement in the dissemination of these resolutions, so that the entire Tanganyika community can learn about the rights of women and youth in terms of participation in peace and security.

For her part, REFEMET coordinator Maracus Lutumba highlighted the crucial role of the media in raising awareness among the population about the objectives and pillars of resolutions 1325 and 2250. She stressed the importance of the participation of all segments of society, particularly women and youth, in the consolidation of peace and security in the province of Tanganyika.

United Nations resolutions 1325 and 2250 were adopted to ensure respect for the rights of women and youth, as well as their active participation in peace and post-conflict reconstruction processes. These resolutions are essential to promote sustainable peace and combat violent extremism in conflict-affected regions.

In conclusion, this capacity-building workshop enabled journalists in Tanganyika to become aware of the importance of resolutions 1325 and 2250 for the promotion of peace and security in their region. Their role as information relays is crucial to ensure the dissemination of these resolutions and guarantee the participation of all in building a more peaceful and inclusive future.
