Fatshimétrie, October 14, 2024 – The International Day of the Girl Child was celebrated through enriching exchanges between the Minister of Gender and more than 1,500 students from the “Movenda” high school, marking a necessary awareness for young girls in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
Under the inspiring theme “The Congo of tomorrow with autonomous girls”, this event highlighted the urgency for young Congolese girls to project themselves into a future where their autonomy and vision are essential foundations. The Minister of Gender, Family and Children, Léonnie Kandolo Omoyi, stressed the importance of this day which highlights the particular challenges faced by young girls and adolescents, due to their status as children and their feminine identity.
Beyond the borders of the DRC, girls around the world face obstacles and violations of their rights, both in terms of children’s rights and women’s rights. The celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child is a poignant reminder of the need to promote gender equality and ensure respect for the fundamental rights of all girls, regardless of their place of birth.
This ceremony, which brought together several important personalities such as the Deputy Representative of UNFPA and the Secretary General of the Ministry of Gender, as well as deputies and ministry executives, was an opportunity to highlight the potential and aspirations of young Congolese girls. By promoting their autonomy and encouraging their active participation in building the future of Congo, it is possible to create a more just and inclusive society for all.
