The news of his death was shared by his friend and ex-international, Segun Odegbami, on Sunday.

Peter Fregene had been battling a serious illness, surrounded by his wife Tina and two of his children. His friend Segun Odegbami, aware of the plight, had earlier launched an appeal for donations to financially support Fregene, who was then hospitalized in Sapele, Delta State.

Despite efforts to cover the ambulance costs, additional financial requirements were required for his transfer to a teaching hospital. Segun Odegbami bitterly raised the lack of an effective support system for retired sportsmen in Nigeria.

Peter Fregene, also known as ‘Apo’ and ‘The Flying Cat’, left an indelible mark on Nigerian football. His participation in the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico and his involvement with the national doorball team in the 1960s and 70s marked the country’s sporting history.

His reputation was based on his remarkable reflexes and unwavering resilience on the pitch, earning him nicknames that were a testament to his exceptional talent. Segun Odegbami shared the news of his friend’s passing with emotion, expressing his gratitude to all those who supported Peter Fregene during his struggle.
