Educating young girls for a bright future: a Congolese leader’s urgent call

Fatshimetrie, October 13, 2024 – Young women in Equateur province, in the northwest of the Democratic Republic of Congo, are encouraged to embrace studies as essential allies to build a solid future. In a recent interview, Mathilde Ngandomoko Ngbenge, head of the provincial division of Communication and Media, stressed the crucial importance of training for young girls in the region.

“Today, the path to a promising future for young girls is in the classrooms, and not in the streets where vagrancy and the risks of sexually transmitted diseases are rife. It is essential that they devote themselves fully to their studies to build a bright future for themselves,” insisted Ms. Ngbenge.

She also highlighted the fact that education not only guarantees a successful future for young girls, but also for young boys, by providing them with the tools to build successful careers. Sexual vagrancy and risky activities are not viable options for ensuring a bright future.

Calling on parents to fully assume their role in the education and supervision of their children, Ms. Ngbenge stressed that young girls should not be forced to engage in lucrative activities to support the family. “It is essential that parents take their responsibilities seriously and ensure that their children are protected from the threats that can arise when they are left to their own devices,” she added.

Furthermore, the celebration of the International Day of the Girl Child, scheduled in Bikoro in the coming days, promises to be an opportunity to further raise awareness on the importance of education and the empowerment of young girls in the region.

Ultimately, investing in the education of young girls in Equateur represents a long-term investment in the personal, professional and social development of the entire community. By encouraging them to prioritize their studies, we are helping to build a brighter and more fulfilling future for all.
