“Health, security and politics: the latest news from the Democratic Republic of Congo”

The health situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo is a matter of concern for the government. At the last meeting of the Council of Ministers, the Minister of Public Health presented the information note on the situation which remains under control. However, continued efforts to curb and eradicate certain diseases, including cholera and measles, remain a concern.

The meeting also addressed the concerns of professionals in the health sector. The union bench of health professionals had threatened to resume the strike movement if the specifications were not executed. The government reacted by organizing a meeting with representatives of the trade union bench to set up an interministerial commission responsible for harmonizing salaries and aligning bonuses for doctors, nurses, administrators and other health professionals in the public services of the state. The preparatory work has started since June 7, 2023 and the launch is scheduled for Saturday, June 10, 2023.

In addition, in other news from the country, a deadly attack took place in a site for displaced people, calling for rapid intervention to guarantee the safety of civilian populations. FCC senators have decided to boycott the seat distribution bill that is dividing the Senate. On the other hand, two Congolese students have just won the national final of the OHADA international competition and will represent the DRC at the 2023 edition of “Génies en Herbe”.

Finally, Barrick Gold Corporation announced an investment of 25 million to save the white rhinos in Garamba National Park. On the political side, a Congolese politician, Hortense Kavuo Maliro, is running for the presidency for an inclusive management of the DRC, while the Deputy Prime Minister, Jean-Pierre Bemba Ngombo, is carrying out an observation mission in Goma on the situation of the war in North Kivu.

Unfortunately, CODECO returned to violence and a new attack left 41 displaced people dead in Ituri province. Despite legal advances in favor of the inclusion of women in the DRC, challenges remain for the elections
