Kaduna assault case: Market women face justice

The incident in Kaduna highlights the violence some traders can face in the course of their business. Two young women, aged 24 and 28, residing respectively in the Ungwan Yelwa TV area, were arraigned in court accused of causing grievous hurt to a trader. Both sisters pleaded not guilty to the charges levelled against them.

According to the prosecution counsel, Inspector Chidi Leo, the matter was reported to the police in Sabon Tasha, Kaduna, by Felicia Samson on October 7. It was reported that the accused went to the complainant’s shop in the middle of the day and demanded a loaf of bread worth N1,200. The trader gave the sisters N1,500 but had no change to return the difference. An argument broke out and the accused women violently assaulted the trader, causing her serious injuries.

Neighbours intervened to save the victim, who was rushed to Sabon Tasha General Hospital for treatment. The accused women face a possible seven-year prison sentence under Section 224 of the Kaduna State Penal Code 2017, if convicted of the assault.

This incident highlights the need to combat violence and promote an environment of respect and tolerance. Traders should be able to operate safely without fear of being attacked over simple currency issues. It is essential that justice is served in this case to ensure the safety of traders and deter such acts of violence in the future.

In conclusion, society must strongly condemn any act of violence and promote values of peace and mutual respect. Traders deserve to conduct their business in peace, without fear for their physical safety. Let us hope that this case will serve as a lesson and help raise awareness about the importance of respect and peaceful coexistence in our society.
