In the tumultuous backstage of Riverine politics, a conflict is brewing between former Governor Nyesom Wike and the incumbent Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The feud, which has been raging between the two Rivers leaders, threatens to cast a shadow over the progress and development of the state. The mounting tension has raised concerns among the Niger Delta Civil Society Leaders Forum, which is urgently appealing for restraint to avoid adverse consequences for the region.
The Chairman of the Forum, Mr. Okezi Odugala, and its Secretary, Prince Emmanuel Ogan, expressed their concern in a statement issued in Asaba. They underscored the far-reaching implications that this dispute could have on the stability and security of Rivers State, as well as the entire Niger Delta region.
The Niger Delta Civil Society Leaders Forum is volunteering for a peace mission to facilitate reconciliation between the two leaders. The objective is to promote constructive dialogue, resolve underlying differences and foster mutual understanding for peaceful co-existence.
Political leaders are urged to put the interests of Rivers and its people above their personal and political interests. The Forum encourages Nyesom Wike and Siminalayi Fubara to engage in constructive dialogue, with the ambition of achieving a peaceful resolution of their differences, in the greater interest of the State.
Calling for the collaboration of all stakeholders, including political parties, community leaders and citizens, the Forum hopes that this peace initiative will garner widespread support. A stakeholders meeting will be held to foster understanding and peacefully resolve the dispute.
Furthermore, the Forum envisages establishing a conflict resolution mechanism to effectively address future disputes and ensure lasting peace. He pledged to work tirelessly to restore peace in Rivers State, convinced that it is through unity and cooperation that the state can overcome its current challenges and build a better future for its people.
