President Bola Tinubu’s recent speech at the 64th Independence Day celebration has been roundly criticised by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) for its spurious claims and empty promises. The party says the speech only perpetuated the failures of the All Progressives Congress (APC) administration and failed to address the genuine economic and security concerns of Nigerians.
The National Communication Secretary of the PDP, Hon. Debo Ologunagba, in a statement, said President Tinubu’s speech was a complete waste of time. It reportedly failed to address the issues in depth or offer tangible solutions to the economic and security challenges currently facing Nigerians.
The PDP says the current administration is grossly insensitive to the suffering of the people, confirming the hopelessness of a government known for its lack of responsiveness and empathy. The speech allegedly ignored the calls of Nigerians to alleviate their suffering by reviewing the current stifling policies.
Furthermore, the PDP points out that the President’s claims of micro-economic improvement, lower cost of living and food self-sufficiency do not match reality. The government allegedly failed to lower the price of fuel, inject resources into the productive sector to boost employment and stabilize the value of the Naira.
The President’s failure to listen to the issues of lowering the price of fuel, creating jobs and enhancing the value of the Naira, according to the PDP, reveals a deep disconnect between the APC administration and the Nigerian people, especially the youth.
Furthermore, the PDP deplores the government’s silence on the erosion of democracy and the constant attacks on constitutionally guaranteed rights. The party calls on Nigerians to remain calm despite their disappointment and invites President Tinubu to go to the field to see for himself the reality of the challenges faced by the citizens.
In short, President Tinubu’s speech was criticised for its lack of concrete answers to the economic and security challenges facing the country. The PDP is calling for real awareness and action by the government to address the real challenges facing Nigeria.
