Facing the looming demographic crisis in Mahagi: Professor Baudouin Kakura’s urgent call for action

Fatshimetrie, October 1, 2024 – An urgent call for action to counter the soaring population in Mahagi in the Democratic Republic of Congo was launched by a prominent researcher at a recent press conference. Professor Baudouin Kakura, a development expert and consultation leader, warned of impending disaster if effective measures are not taken quickly.

As a researcher specializing in psychology and a lecturer at various universities, Professor Kakura stressed the urgent need to raise awareness among the population on the issues related to uncontrolled population growth. He highlighted the risks of humanitarian, social and economic disasters that could hit the Mahagi region by 2035 if concrete actions are not taken.

Proposals put forward by Professor Kakura include raising awareness among the population through churches, the media and local NGOs, as well as promoting education and information on family planning. He also advocated for the establishment of family planning and reproductive health services in medical centers, to help couples make informed decisions about fertility.

An innovative proposal put forward by the researcher is the concept of demographic shift, which would consist of moving part of the population of Mahagi to other less populated regions. This measure, which has already been successfully tested in the past, could offer a temporary solution to the increasing demographic pressure in the region.

Faced with a population of more than 3 million inhabitants already recorded in 2023, the territory of Mahagi is facing major challenges in terms of sustainable development and citizen well-being. Professor Kakura urges the authorities and partners to act proactively to avoid an inevitable humanitarian crisis if nothing is done in the coming years.

In conclusion, the issue of galloping demography in Mahagi represents a major challenge that requires a collective and coordinated response. Professor Kakura’s recommendations provide valuable insights into the development of public policies and the implementation of effective programs aimed at ensuring a sustainable future for the region and its people. It is time to act, before it is too late.
