President Bola Tinubu’s recent speech at the 64th Independence Day celebrations highlighted an important decision on disaster preparedness. He announced a measure to avert future disasters.
President Tinubu’s interest in the issue focused on the recent floods that destroyed lives and property in Maiduguri, the Borno State capital. He pledged to ensure that such a tragedy would not recur in the future.
In an effort to be responsive to natural disasters, the government has taken swift action. Following the visit of Vice President Kashim Shettima to Maiduguri, President Tinubu also visited the area to reassure the people that the Federal Government will always be with the people in times of crisis.
One of the tangible actions taken was the approval by the Federal Executive Council of a Disaster Relief Fund, to mobilize funds from the private and public sectors for a more effective response to emergencies. In addition, integrity tests were ordered on all dams in the country in a bid to prevent future disasters.
President Tinubu stressed the importance of Nigerians’ support for government efforts and policies aimed at improving living conditions. He also highlighted ongoing reforms aimed at revitalizing the national economy.
“We are working to put our economy back on track to serve us best. We are also committed to greater sustainability. If we do not address the fiscal imbalances that have led to the current economic crisis, our country will face an uncertain future and unimaginable consequences.”
As a result of these reforms, the country has attracted over $30 billion in foreign direct investment in the past year. Nigeria remains firmly committed to freedom of enterprise, open markets for investment while preserving the integrity and efficiency of its regulatory processes.
This series of measures taken by the government is part of a desire to strengthen the country’s resilience to internal and external challenges, and to ensure a prosperous future for all its citizens. We can only hope that these actions will have a positive and lasting impact on the entire Nigerian population.
