“Patsheli Kahambo: When the artist-painter celebrates work and perseverance to get luck in Kinshasa”.

In Congolese culture, luck is an important concept, symbolizing the hope of a favorable turnaround at any time. However, for painter Patsheli Kahambo, this notion is strongly linked to work. This is what he tried to represent in his exhibition at the Malabo gallery in Kinshasa, which highlights the trades of the Congolese city.

Through her paintings, Patsheli Kahambo promotes the idea that to be lucky, you have to work hard, sweat and rely on yourself, rather than waiting for things to fall from the sky. The famous expression “Chance eloko pamba”, popularized by the artist Papa Wemba, therefore takes on a different meaning which aims to boost spirits and encourage perseverance.

The exhibition also presents a painting of the city of Kinshasa and its small trades which allow a large part of the population to survive, despite a high unemployment rate. Among the different professions, the artist wanted to highlight that of women motorcycle taxi drivers, who are still rarely represented in this profession.

Patsheli Kahambo’s exhibition thus offers a real reflection on luck, work and perseverance, fundamental values for success in a difficult context like that of Kinshasa. Through these canvases and his installation, the artist encourages everyone to take charge of their destiny and to rely on themselves to bend the course of their existence.
