Record drug seizure in Nigeria: a major blow against drug trafficking

In a recent operation by the Nigerian authorities, a major drug seizure was made during a raid on a warehouse in Akala, Mushin area of ​​Lagos. The arrest of the suspect involved in the case was made during a well-orchestrated raid by the National Drugs and Narcotics Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA).

According to the NDLEA spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, the arrest was made on Wednesday, September 4, 2023 and resulted in the recovery of 1,101kg of Ghana Loud, a potent strain of cannabis. The seizure was the result of a thorough investigation by the agency’s Assets and Financial Investigations Directorate, which included tracing and freezing 20 bank accounts linked to the suspect.

In another development, another intervention by the NDLEA law enforcement agencies in Lagos led to the arrest of a wanted community leader, the Sarkin Yamma of Badagry, Alhaji Bashir Talba. This arrest followed the arrest of his two wives and son, and the seizure of 226.2kg of cannabis at their home in Badagry on 18th September.

In another part of the operation, significant quantities of drugs were seized at various locations including Badore, Ajah, Lekki, where over 9.7kg of cannabis sativa and 50 litres of ‘monkey tail’, a fermented mixture of cannabis and gin, were found in the possession of a suspect.

In addition to these cases, other arrests were made along the Okene-Lokoja-Abuja expressway, involving three individuals transporting a large quantity of cannabis in a Mercedes truck from Osun to Dei Dei in Abuja. In addition, in Kogi, another individual was arrested with 33.4 kg of the same psychoactive substance and a firearm.

These seizures and arrests demonstrate the commitment of the Nigerian authorities to combat drug trafficking and protect the population from the harmful effects of narcotics. The joint operations conducted by the various security agencies demonstrate effective coordination to counter trafficking networks.
