The President of the National Assembly of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Christophe Mboso, held a meeting on Wednesday August 9 with Alyson King Obe, the new Ambassador of Great Britain accredited to the DRC. This meeting was an opportunity to address burning current issues, including the murder of national deputy Chérubin Okende.
During this exchange, Alyson King Obe expressed his condolences for the loss of Cherubin Okende and said that Great Britain could help in the investigation into his assassination. The diplomat also stressed the importance of the partnership between the DRC and Great Britain, as well as the need to strengthen interparliamentary relations between the two countries.
Furthermore, the issue of Rwandan aggression towards the DRC was also addressed. Alyson King Obe reaffirmed that Britain supports the sovereignty and inclusiveness of Congolese territory, in accordance with international law. She also underlined her country’s commitment to supporting regional efforts to achieve lasting peace in eastern DRC.
Finally, the discussion also focused on the importance of organizing inclusive, credible and transparent elections in the DRC, in order to allow all Congolese to exercise their democratic choice to elect their leaders.
