“Adolphe Muzito, the former Prime Minister who raised university professors’ salaries to $2,000”

In an interview with RTGA on June 10, Professor David Lubo said that it was under former Prime Minister Adolphe Muzito that university professors saw a considerable increase in their salaries. According to the president of the Association of Professors of the University of Kinshasa (APUKIN), Adolphe Muzito had managed to raise their salary to $2,000, an unprecedented amount at the time. Efforts to readjust to the budget rate continued under the governance of Bruno Tshibala, but failed to improve the purchasing power of professors, Professor Lubo noted.

The president of APUKIN also noted the need not to leave room for propagandist remarks in the debates on the salaries of university professors, an attitude which will only fuel tensions within this community. It calls for transparency and truth that avoid false hopes or false observations that could harm their stability.

Several years after this event, the university community retains fond memories of Adolphe Muzito. Teachers remember the efforts of this former Prime Minister, who allowed a remarkable advance in the salary situation of teachers. This information could thus be mentioned during the next presidential election by Nouvel Elan, a political party of which Adolphe Muzito is the leader.

It is important to note that salaries, especially those of teachers, are a sensitive subject that has often been the source of tensions and strikes in Congolese universities. Successive governments therefore have a role to play in the transparent management of public accounts to meet the expectations of this category of essential workers in the development of the country.
