The East African Community (EAC) Tribunal opens its doors in Arusha, Tanzania, for a historic trial highlighting Rwanda’s atrocities in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). This Thursday, September 26, 2024, will go down in history as the day justice began to take its course to reveal the truth about the tragic events that shook the region.

The Congolese delegation, led by the Deputy Minister of Justice and Electoral Disputes, Samuel Mbemba, is traveling to Arusha to express the voice of the DRC and defend justice and truth. This first hearing marks the beginning of a crucial process during which the DRC will have to demonstrate Rwanda’s reprehensible actions, in violation of the fundamental principles of the East African Community.

The accusations made against Rwanda by the Democratic Republic of Congo are serious and concern the Rwandan military presence in the East of the country, as well as the acts of pillaging, rape and massacres that have brought mourning to this region. These crimes against humanity cannot be ignored and must be condemned in the strongest possible terms.

In a poignant speech delivered before the United Nations General Assembly, the President of the DRC, Félix Tshisekedi, called for severe sanctions against the Rwandan regime, which he accuses of destabilizing the East of his country by supporting the M23 rebels. This strong stance demonstrates President Tshisekedi’s determination to defend the sovereignty and territorial integrity of his country against any form of external interference and aggression.

This trial before the EAC Court of Justice is a unique opportunity to shed light on the tragic events that have marked the region, and to prosecute those responsible for these heinous crimes. The quest for justice and truth is essential to ensure peace and stability in East Africa, and to allow the populations who have been victims of these atrocities to rebuild their lives and heal their wounds.

In conclusion, this trial represents an important step towards justice and reconciliation in a region ravaged by violence and chaos. Let us hope that the truth comes out and that those responsible for these abominable crimes are held accountable for their actions before international justice.
