The Renaissance of African Cinema: The Inauguration of the Africa Film Society Film Library and Theatre

The Africa Film Society recently announced the inauguration of its newest cultural gem in East Legon, Ghana: the Film Library, Theatre and Exhibition Space. This historic event marks a major step forward in the promotion and preservation of Africa’s rich cinematic heritage.

Led by the talented Ghanaian filmmaker Blitz Bazawule, the Africa Film Society celebrates its mission to preserve the essence of African films, encourage the emergence of new filmmakers, and cultivate an audience eager to discover these authentic stories.

The library is much more than just a collection of books and films: it is a treasure trove of knowledge for film makers and enthusiasts. It is filled with unique works, vinyl soundtracks and precious archives that offer an immersive dive into African cinema.

The Arthouse Theatre, with a capacity of 50 seats, is the natural extension of the Africa Film Society’s “Classics In the Park” program. Through screenings of classic and contemporary films, this venue becomes the meeting point for members of the society and a diverse audience, eager for cinematic discoveries.

The “Classics In the Park” initiative is a true tribute to the early days of African cinema (from 1950 to 1980). By offering free outdoor cinema screenings in communities, the Africa Film Society is committed to rehabilitating and rebroadcasting these cinematic treasures, true witnesses of history.

Beyond the simple screening of films, the Africa Film Society advocates true film education, aimed at raising public awareness of the cultural richness of Africa and the importance of preserving its cinematic heritage.

This new chapter in the history of the Africa Film Society represents an unwavering commitment to African art and culture, and an invitation to explore a world of compelling storytelling through the cinema screen.
