Fight against malaria in Kasaï-Oriental: challenges and promising solutions

Fatshimetrie, September 24, 2024 – During the first six months of the current year, the malaria situation in Kasai-Oriental, the central region of the Democratic Republic of Congo, remains worrying. Indeed, according to data provided by the provincial coordination of the fight against malaria, no less than 504,834 cases of malaria have been recorded, including unfortunately 138 deaths.

Dr. Joseph Kalombo Lunda, coordinating physician of the National Malaria Control Program (PNLP) in the province, highlights the challenges they face. He points out that Kasai-Oriental is among the 10 provinces in the country most affected by this disease, with alarming figures for confirmed cases and deaths. Indeed, of the 138 deaths recorded, 110 concern children under 5 years old, highlighting the vulnerability of the youngest to malaria.

Dr. Kalombo identifies some particularly affected health zones, such as Kansele, Tshilundu and Miabi, while others, such as Mukumbi and Lukekenge, have recorded fewer cases. He also mentions that the Cilenge health zone is heavily affected, with 21 deaths recorded, mainly among the child population.

In terms of factors favoring the spread of malaria, Dr. Kalombo emphasizes the importance of heat and rain. Indeed, these climatic conditions favor the reproduction of mosquitoes, vectors of the disease, by creating environments conducive to the proliferation of parasites responsible for malaria.

To combat this disease, the coordinating doctor emphasizes the importance of preventive measures. He recommends in particular the use of insecticide-treated mosquito nets for sleeping, medical monitoring of pregnant women and environmental sanitation. He emphasizes that malaria prevention is a collective effort that requires a multidisciplinary approach.

In conclusion, the fight against malaria in Kasai-Oriental requires concerted action by health authorities, local communities and the general population. It is essential to raise awareness on the importance of preventive measures and to strengthen health systems to ensure adequate access to care for all. The perseverance and commitment of all are essential to reduce the impact of this devastating disease in the region.

This new and improved look at the malaria situation in Kasai-Oriental highlights the issues and challenges facing the province, while emphasizing the importance of prevention and collaboration to overcome this public health threat.
