The Minister of Foreign Affairs, Emigration and Expatriates Affairs of Egypt, Badr Abdelatty, recently stressed the need for a truce and the removal of any obstacles erected by Israel to allow humanitarian aid to reach Gaza, in order to resolve the current crisis in the region.
During a meeting held in New York on the sidelines of the high-level sessions of the United Nations General Assembly, the Minister met with Sigrid Kaag, Under-Secretary-General of the United Nations for Humanitarian Affairs and Reconstruction in Gaza.
In a climate of cooperation, the Minister expressed the favorable reception of the UN representative and reaffirmed Egypt’s continued support to enable it to fulfill the responsibilities set out in Security Council Resolution No. 2720. This resolution provides for the establishment of a Mechanism for Gaza, aimed at “accelerating the provision of humanitarian relief in the Gaza Strip by States not party to the conflict, in consultation with all relevant parties, to accelerate and simplify the assistance process while ensuring that aid reaches civilians”.
The Minister stressed the importance of cooperation between all countries with the UN Chief Coordinator to finalize the necessary procedures for the mechanism as soon as possible, stressing the need to continue to provide the Security Council with transparent and clear updates on the latest developments related to the establishment of the UN 2720 Mechanism.
This highly important meeting between the Egyptian Minister and the UN representative underlines the commitment of the international community to find solutions to resolve the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Cooperation between the different actors is essential to enable rapid and effective action in favor of populations in vulnerable situations.
