As part of the preparations for the off-cycle election in Edo, scheduled for Saturday, September 21, 2024, the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, has taken comprehensive security measures to ensure a peaceful, transparent and credible electoral process. The main objective of these measures is to foster an environment conducive to free, fair and safe elections for all citizens of Edo State.

Among the measures announced is the restriction of vehicular movement on roads, waterways and other means of transport from 6:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. on election day. This restriction is aimed at limiting non-essential movement and ensuring security and public order during the electoral process. Exceptions will however be made for essential services such as accredited media, polling agents, ambulances and emergency responders to allow for the smooth conduct of the polls.

Furthermore, in order to preserve the integrity of the electoral process, the Inspector General of Police has also prohibited the presence of any security personnel and escorts accompanying VIPs to polling stations and tabulation centres. He has also prohibited political figures from using unauthorized escorts during this crucial event. Similarly, the use of sirens by unauthorized vehicles is strictly prohibited to ensure a climate of calm and serenity for voters.

In the interest of inclusiveness and respect for the rights of all citizens, special attention will be given to persons with disabilities, pregnant women, nursing mothers, the elderly and those with mobility difficulties. It is essential that all polling stations, whether in urban or rural areas, are accessible to all, in line with standards of fairness and respect for human rights.

In addition, the Inspector General of Police appealed to citizens not to make abusive calls to designated monitoring and helplines, stressing that text messages are more effective for operational purposes. Political parties, candidates and their supporters are urged to behave responsibly and abide by electoral laws. Any violations or attempts to disrupt the electoral process will be dealt with to the fullest extent of the law.. Emphasis is placed on the need for all political stakeholders to adhere to the guidelines laid down to avoid any undue interference or intimidation during the polls.

Finally, the Inspector General of Police reaffirms the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to fostering a secure and democratic environment. He emphasizes the importance of collaboration and participation by all to ensure the smooth conduct of elections in Edo and across the country in the future. By working together, we can ensure fair, transparent and peaceful elections, thereby strengthening democracy in the heart of Edo State and beyond.
