Attack on the headquarters of the Mzee Laurent Désiré Kabila Foundation: Why is security in the DRC still precarious?

The headquarters of the Mzee Laurent Désiré Kabila Foundation has not been spared from new attacks. In a press release, the president of the foundation, Jaynet Kabila, denounced acts which she describes as “barbaric, criminal and despicable”, which violate the laws of the Republic on the protection of guaranteed rights and the inviolability of homes. According to her, the foundation’s headquarters was attacked on the night of June 1 to 2 by people suspected of being security service agents and an unidentified military commando. Jaynet Kabila points out that this is the second time that the Mzee Laurent Désiré Kabila Foundation has faced such a situation.

These acts, according to the President of the Foundation, are inadmissible and do not respect the memory of Laurent-Désiré Kabila, “worthy son of the country who devoted his youth and his life to the fight against the dictatorial system”. It also recalls that these acts were brought to the attention of the competent authorities during a similar attack last year.

The security situation in the DRC is unfortunately still precarious. Recent news shows the extent of the security crisis, with armed attacks, kidnappings, coup attempts, political violence and tensions between different communities. Strategic sites and public figures are also regularly the target of similar attacks, which demonstrates the urgency of putting in place measures to strengthen security and the rule of law in the country.

These tragic events should not overshadow the initiatives and projects underway to improve the country’s socio-economic situation and promote development. The DRC recently launched an agricultural program in partnership with DEM and Bio-Agro Business as well as a second wave of biometric identification of state agents in Kinshasa. The DRC has also taken a crucial step towards issuing national identity cards. These positive initiatives should be welcomed and encouraged because they contribute to strengthening institutions, ensuring the security of citizens and promoting the emergence of the DRC.

However, for these initiatives to have a significant impact, it is necessary to take measures to guarantee the security and stability of the country. The DRC must therefore continue to work on the reform of its security institutions, the fight against corruption, the promotion of national reconciliation and the consolidation of the rule of law.
