Protection of the national workforce in Goma: A crucial issue for employment equity

Goma, September 17, 2024 – The issue of protecting the national workforce has become a crucial issue in Goma, North Kivu, during recent discussions between the military governor and a delegation from the Labor Inspectorate. This legislation aims to guarantee the rights of Congolese workers in a context where the presence of many foreign workers raises questions relating to equity and local employment.

During his visit to Goma, Michel Kapala, Inspector General of Labor, stressed the importance of ensuring the application of the law on the protection of the national workforce. He highlighted the need to monitor the status of foreign workers present on Congolese territory, in order to ensure that they comply with the rules in force and do not occupy positions that could be attributed to local workers.

This initiative is part of a logic of social justice advocated by the authorities, who recognize that economic development cannot be achieved to the detriment of the rights of national workers. Indeed, without employment and equality of opportunity, it is difficult to talk about sustainable social progress.

The trade and distribution sectors are particularly concerned by the issue of local employment, with the frequent presence of foreign workers in shops and small businesses. It is essential to guarantee Congolese workers access to these professional opportunities, and to ensure that vacant positions are first offered to nationals.

By restoring true social justice and protecting the national workforce, the government of North Kivu wishes to contribute to improving the living conditions of Congolese workers and promoting a true rule of law.

This approach is part of a broader desire to promote the emergence of an inclusive economy, in which all workers, whether nationals or foreigners, can benefit from fair and equitable working conditions. By ensuring the strict application of employment legislation, North Kivu affirms its desire to make the protection of the national workforce a priority in the service of the economic and social development of the region.
