A delegation from Ukraine recently set foot in South Kivu to closely study the innovative model of the Panzi General Reference Hospital, founded by Doctor Denis Mukwege. The latter distinguished himself by his relentless fight against violence against women during armed conflicts. The aim of this visit is to draw inspiration from the expertise acquired by Dr. Mukwege’s team in caring for victims of sexual violence.
Since coming to power, President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi Tshilombo has made the fight against violence against women a priority by strengthening female representation in decision-making spheres. This initiative was welcomed and supported by the Ukrainian delegation that came to seek concrete solutions to combat sexual violence during conflicts.
Vasyl Lutsyk, Head of the National Social Service of Ukraine, expressed satisfaction with the discussions with the provincial governor and the recommendations received. This collaboration between the DRC and Ukraine aims to strengthen joint efforts to combat violence against women, given the precarious security situations in both countries marked by attacks.
The care of survivors of sexual violence at Panzi Hospital is based on a holistic model that encompasses the medical, psychosocial, socio-economic and legal aspects. Dr. Mukwege, Nobel Peace Prize winner, stressed the importance of sharing this knowledge and experience with the Ukrainian delegation to enrich practices in their country.
The exchange between the two parties continued with a visit to Panzi Hospital, the Mukwege Foundation and meetings with women survivors of sexual violence. This five-day immersion in Congolese soil will allow the Ukrainian delegation to better understand the challenges and good practices in caring for victims of sexual violence.
It should be noted that the Ukrainian government plays a crucial role in peace and stability in many African countries, including the DRC, by contributing significantly to humanitarian action. This collaboration between the DRC and Ukraine in the fight against violence against women is therefore of capital importance for supporting victims and promoting peace in the region.
