The political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) is in the spotlight, in light of the upcoming elections due to take place in December this year. The European Union is taking the lead and has sent a delegation to discuss security conditions before deploying its election observers. Vincent Ringenberg, head of the EU exploratory mission, spoke with the Deputy Prime Minister in charge of defense to obtain security assurances. This meeting particularly focused on the Goma area, a high-risk region. Ringenberg explained that the mission of the team is to observe the political, security and logistical conditions of the country, before giving a response to the Congolese government next September.
The European Union delegation is thus continuing its exploratory mission begun a few days ago. She had met with the President of the National Assembly to discuss the political, security and logistical conditions of their deployment. The team is also continuing to meet with influential figures in the region to have a better analysis of the security situation in the DRC.
The security situation in the DRC is still complex with the persistent threat of armed groups in several regions. Our contributor’s report on the ground in Kongo Central reveals a critical situation marked by looting and kidnappings. In the Rwenzori region, ADF rebels continue to sow terror and paralyze education.
Despite this turbulent situation, the government and its partners are trying to improve the climate by increasing development projects. Thus, the DRC has launched a new agricultural program in partnership with DEM and Bio Agro Business to improve the country’s agricultural production.
Although the DRC faces many security challenges, another crucial aspect of governance is the issuance of national identity cards. As such, the issuance of identity cards is progressing gradually and the DRC is reaching a crucial stage in this process.
Finally, football continues to unite the Congolese, and fans are looking forward to the African Cup of Nations, which will take place next year. The Leopards of the DRC are in preparation to face the Panthers of Gabon.
In sum, the DRC is a country in full reinvention, facing adversity, but trying to take concrete measures to improve both security and economic development.
