The 10th UNPC Congress: Towards a Renaissance of Journalism in the DRC

The National Union of the Press of Congo (UNPC) is actively preparing for its 10th ordinary congress, called “Renaissance”, which will be held from September 17 to 19, 2024 at the Nganda center in Kinshasa. This major event will bring together nearly 200 congress participants from different provinces, all driven by the desire to contribute to the renaissance and evolution of the journalistic profession in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

At the heart of this three-day symposium will be fascinating and essential discussions on the major issues impacting the profession of journalism in a constantly changing context. Participants will have the opportunity to discuss the current and future challenges of journalism, questions of ethics and professional conduct, as well as ways to promote a free, independent and quality press.

One of the highlights of this congress will be the election of the new leaders of the UNPC, responsible for carrying the voice of Congolese journalists and defending their interests. These future important figures will have the crucial mission of strengthening cohesion within the profession, promoting investigative journalism and ensuring that freedom of expression is respected and protected.

To fully understand the issues at stake in this 10th edition of the UNPC congress, it is essential to consider the importance of the press in a democratic society. The media play a fundamental role in the functioning of a democracy by informing citizens, raising their awareness of societal issues and enabling them to form an informed opinion.

This event will therefore be an opportunity for Congolese press actors to reaffirm their commitment to responsible and committed journalism, guaranteeing transparency and democracy. The UNPC congress thus marks an important step in strengthening the journalistic profession in the Democratic Republic of Congo, and demonstrates the common desire to advance press freedom and respect for the right to information for all.
