Title: Deadly violence by the ADF in Beni, North Kivu: the army called upon to redouble its efforts
North Kivu province in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) appears to be awash in violence. The sector of Rwenzori, in the territory of Beni, is once again immersed in mourning following the deadly attacks by the rebels of the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF).
Fifteen civilians were killed by the ADF between Wednesday night and Friday, according to local civil society and the local youth committee. Bukokoma, a village near the locality of Nzenga Kasusku, was the scene of the death of 12 people. The deceased were women, men and children. Meanwhile, three other people were killed in Kalivula and Kyandengi.
The deep sadness that followed these events demonstrates that the need for security guarantees is more important than ever. The escalation of violence is also aggravating the education situation. Several schools have been closed, hampering public sector activities.
According to Meleki Mulala, local civil society coordinator, the time has come for the FARDC to rethink their strategies in the fight against the rebels. The current situation can be attributed to the revenge of the latter in response to their defeat in the combined military operations of FARDC and UPDF elements in the Bashu chiefdom.
Ultimately, the authorities must absolutely find solutions to respond to the current security crisis, which is worsening day by day. This implies strong cooperation from the entire international community, to help the FARDC strengthen their presence on the ground in order to protect the local population. Only a collective reaction will put an end to these troubles
