In a recent speech delivered by the Yoruba opinion leader, the Aare Ona Kakanfo of Yorubaland, Iba Gani Adams, a bitter assessment of the current administration of President Bola Tinubu was made. Highlighting a growing indifference, blatant insensitivity and unresponsiveness to the challenges faced by Nigerians, Adams expressed deep dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs in the country.
In his open letter titled “President Bola Tinubu, Time is Running Out”, he expressed dismay at the disappointments brought by the current administration and said the citizens could no longer bear the increasing economic challenges. He stressed the fact that Nigeria as a nation is blessed with inestimable natural and human resources but these resources have been mismanaged and selfishly exploited by past leaders.
Turning to President Tinubu, who was seen as a potential saviour in his run-up to the 2023 elections, Adams expressed disappointment at the developments. He pointed to the skyrocketing price of petrol and the rapid depreciation of the naira against the dollar, while challenging the president’s economic advisers on their actions and recommendations.
Furthermore, Adams highlighted the alarming rise in insecurity across the country, pointing to the government’s inaction in the face of these threats. Kidnappings, attacks and killings by criminal groups have spread terror among the population, calling into question the effectiveness of the security services and the strategy put in place to combat the scourge.
Finally, he expressed concern over the repression of protests and dissenting voices, denouncing an attack on human rights and freedom of expression. He warned of the consequences of such repression on the stability of the country and called for a wake-up call on the part of the government and the ruling party.
In sum, Adams’ speech reflects a legitimate concern about the current direction Nigeria is taking, highlighting the flaws and shortcomings of a governance that seems to be drifting away from the aspirations and expectations of the people. He calls for deep reflection and concrete actions to address these issues and restore the trust of Nigerians in their leaders.
