“Trial of deputy Edouard Mwangachuchu: revelations about the safety of the SMB mine in North Kivu”

The political situation in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to be unstable. Indeed, the trial of MP Edouard Mwangachuchu raises many questions. The latter and his co-defendant are suspected of having links with the M23 rebels. They are prosecuted for treason, participation in an insurrectionary movement, espionage and illegal possession of weapons of war. These proceedings were initiated following the discovery of weapons of war in the residence of Edouard Mwangachuchu in Kinshasa and also in the premises of his company SMB in Masisi in North Kivu.

The deputy divisional commissioner, Placide Nyembo, former chief of police in North Kivu, appeared as an informant during last Friday’s hearing before the high military court. Nyembo was questioned about securing the Société Mining de Bisunzu (SMB) mine in Masisi territory. He said that 86 police officers, or two teams of 43 elements, were responsible for the security of the SMB mine. This claim contrasts with that of Divisional Commissioner Vital Umiya Awashango, who said the unit was made up of about 20 police officers.

The high military court also asked questions about other administrative aspects, in particular the pay of the elements of the unit. According to a report by the General Police Inspectorate, only 43 police officers were on the payroll instead of 86. Placide Nyembo recalled that the contract signed was for the 43 elements, but that more police officers were needed to meet the needs. mine safety.

The trial of MP Edouard Mwangachuchu reveals the challenges that the DRC faces at the political and economic level. Political tensions and socio-economic concerns pervade the country. To solve these problems, it is necessary that all stakeholders in the DRC collaborate and work together to achieve a common goal of development.
