Teachers’ Strike in North Kivu: A Struggle for Recognition and Justice

Fatshimetrie, September 9, 2024 – The strike by teachers in North Kivu in the Democratic Republic of Congo continues to weigh on the region’s education system. After a general assembly held in Goma, teachers decided to continue their strike action until the government responds to their demands.

The radicalization of the movement clearly indicates the determination of teachers to obtain satisfaction. Reagan Intumbi, president of the National Union of Primary School Teachers (SYNEEPP) in North Kivu, stressed that despite the promises made during the Bibwa conference, teachers have not received the promised payments. As a result, they refuse to return to work until their demands are met.

Teachers in North Kivu are demanding in particular the payment of free education bonuses for the months of July and August 2024, as well as the promised increase of 100,000 Congolese francs.
