Back to school in the Democratic Republic of Congo: between health challenges and social tensions

In a context marked by the monkeypox epidemic and social tensions, the start of the school year in the Democratic Republic of Congo is expected to be under high tension for the year 2024-2025. Despite concerns about the spread of the disease, the authorities have decided to maintain the start of the school year, emphasizing the importance of collaboration between the Ministries of National Education and Public Health to ensure the safety of students.

The Minister of National Education and New Citizenship, Raïssa Malu, went to the Kasai province for the official launch of the start of the school year, highlighting a project for learning and empowering girls. However, this start of the school year is also marked by the discontent of public sector teachers, with unions announcing strikes on the first day of the school year.

The National Union of Teachers of Congo (SYECO) and other union groups are protesting against the government’s failure to respect their demands. This social discontent risks disrupting the smooth running of the school year and highlights the challenges facing the Congolese education system to ensure quality education for all.

Furthermore, President Félix-Antoine Tshisekedi traveled to China to participate in the 9th Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC). This summit, under the banner of partnership for modernization and common development, is a unique opportunity to strengthen ties between China and Africa.

The meeting between Félix Tshisekedi and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, is particularly important, reflecting China’s growing interest in the African continent. This forum offers both parties the opportunity to discuss strategic issues and strengthen their cooperation in various areas.

In conclusion, the start of the school year in the DRC is caught between health issues related to the monkeypox epidemic and teachers’ demands. In this complex context, dialogue and consultation between the different stakeholders appear to be essential elements to ensure a peaceful and productive school year for all education stakeholders.
