Advances in digital health in the Democratic Republic of Congo: challenges and opportunities

“Kinshasa, September 1, 2024 – An online meeting on digital health in the Democratic Republic of Congo recently highlighted the progress and challenges in this crucial area. Organized by the National Agency for Clinical Engineering and Digital Health (ANICNS), this webinar presented the actions undertaken within the framework of Universal Health Coverage (UHC), initiated by the Head of State.

The Director General of ANICNS, Jean Thierry Kalombo, stressed the importance of this restitution work, both for the population and for the technical and financial partners involved in the project. He highlighted the progress made in digital health, welcoming in particular the government strategy aimed at improving the connectivity of health facilities through the deployment of optical fibers.

In this dynamic, Dr. Polydor Mbongani, UHC coordinator, called for increased support for ANICNS, considering this agency as an essential pillar of the health system in DRC. He stressed the need to train health professionals in data analysis and to ensure their loyalty to ensure the sustainability of digital initiatives in the health sector.

Furthermore, Trad Hallton, country director of the NGO “Path”, highlighted the crucial role of his organization in supporting health innovations through digital transformation in the DRC. With its expertise and financial commitment, the NGO actively contributes to the implementation of the global “Digital square” project, thus promoting the adoption of digital solutions in health.

Finally, Jean-Luc Mugogwa, deputy coordinator of the Digital Development Agency (ADN), stressed the government’s ambition to guarantee progressive coverage in terms of connectivity throughout the national territory. Beyond optical fibers, technological solutions such as satellite technologies will be deployed to connect the most isolated areas, in accordance with the objectives of the government’s 2024-2028 strategic plan.

This online meeting, organized by ANICNS in collaboration with the NGO Path, highlighted the progress and prospects of digital health in the DRC. Beyond the technical and organizational challenges, it highlights the crucial importance of innovation and international cooperation in transforming the health sector towards a more digital and efficient approach. An essential step in the modernization and improvement of health systems in Africa.”
