Title: INEC Nigeria Record PVC Collection: A Significant Step Towards Increased Voter Turnout
The announcement by Sam Olumekun, the National Commissioner of INEC and Chairman of the Voter Information and Education Committee, is a major breakthrough in the electoral process in Nigeria. Indeed, the collection rate of voter cards has reached a peak of 68. per cent out of the 184,438 new cards issued during the recent Continuous Voter Registration exercise.
This marks a new record for INEC since the introduction of the IEC for the out-of-cycle governorship elections in 2015. The PVC collection, which took place in all 192 polling units in Edo State between 22nd and 26th August, was a coordinated effort by INEC.
The Commission welcomes the conclusion of the collection at the polling units. Mindful of the lessons learnt from previous collections, INEC has carefully grouped all PVCs by polling stations, polling stations and LGAs. It has also compiled the collection register, providing details of voters whose cards were ready for collection, and uploaded it on its website.
Sam Olumekun said a detailed breakdown of the collection by LGAs had been posted on the INEC website and social media platforms for public information. He added that the collection would resume in all INEC offices in the 18 LGAs of Edo State from Wednesday to September 8.
He also appealed to the remaining voters to come and collect their PVCs from INEC offices in the LGAs.
This achievement by INEC is a crucial step towards increased voter turnout in Nigeria. By facilitating the collection of voter cards, INEC contributes to enhancing the legitimacy of electoral processes and promoting a more inclusive democracy. This underscores the importance of citizens engaging in the democratic process by voting in elections.
In conclusion, this record performance by INEC in collecting PVCs is a testament to its commitment to free and fair elections. Voters are encouraged to seize this opportunity to exercise their right to vote and help shape Nigeria’s political future.
